What Starting From Nothing Actually Looks Like

Everyone talks about starting.

Very few people talk about what it actually looks like in the beginning.

Not the polished version. Not the “everything is finally working” version. The real version—where nothing is clear yet, and you’re still trying to figure out if what you’re building is even possible.

Right now, “starting from nothing” doesn’t look inspiring most days.

It looks like:

  • Having a vision that feels bigger than your current reality

  • Trying to connect dots that don’t fully connect yet

  • Learning things you didn’t expect to need to learn

  • Balancing a full-time career (or 2) while building something on the side

  • Questioning if you’re doing enough… or doing it right

There’s no step-by-step guide for this part.

There’s no clear “next move” spelled out.

There’s just forward.

For me, this has meant figuring out how to take something that feels like an idea—and slowly turn it into something real.

That includes:

  • Applying for grants and trying to secure funding any way I can

  • Putting together events to help raise money and awareness

  • Understanding what it actually takes to create pet-friendly housing

  • Looking at properties differently—not just as investments, but as opportunities to solve a problem

  • Starting conversations, even when I don’t feel fully prepared

Because the truth is, clarity doesn’t come first.

Action does.

And then there’s the part that’s harder to talk about.

Recently, I was asked to take in a group of four bonded huskies.

And saying no… broke my heart.

Not because I didn’t want to help—but because I can't, Not yet.

That’s the reality of building something like this from the ground up. You see the need.

You feel the urgency. You know what should exist.

But you’re not there yet.

And it makes everything feel like it’s not moving fast enough.

One of the biggest misconceptions about starting something like this is that you need everything lined up before you begin.

The funding. The plan. The connections.

But if you wait for all of that, you never start.

What I’m learning in real time is that you build those things because you started—not before.

Some days, progress looks like a real step forward.

Other days, it looks like research, conversations, or even just sitting with the idea long enough to understand it better.

And that counts too.

If you’re at the beginning of something—anything—it’s okay if it doesn’t feel impressive yet.

It’s not supposed to.

This stage isn’t about proving anything to anyone else.

It’s about deciding that what you’re building matters enough to keep going, even when it’s uncertain.

I’m still in that stage.

Still building. Still figuring it out.

Still moving forward.

Even on the days it feels too slow.

If you’re on a similar path, or if you have ideas, insight, or resources that could help move this mission forward—I’d love to hear from you.

Because starting from nothing doesn’t mean doing it alone.

And the more we share, connect, and build together…the faster “nothing” starts to turn into something real.
